Siddhartha Gautama is known by numerous names: Gautama Buddha, Shakyamuni Buddha, the Awakened One, and the Buddha. A man who lived over 2500 years earlier, Siddhartha was an instructor who laid the structure for lots of Buddhist trainees for centuries to come. Thought to be born in Northeast India, he taught across Eastern India, and his mentors eventually spread out across the world.Because the Buddha lived so long ago, historic records are hard to discover. Siddhartha’s Early Life Siddhartha Gautama was most likely born in Lumbini, a town in modern-day Nepal. Dates of the Buddha’s life are unclear.
