An Introduction to the Phases of the Course Mentors

A little over a thousand years back, a king in Tibet saw the decrease of Buddhism in his homeland and decided to welcome a great scholar from India, by the name of Atisha, to his nation. When Atisha showed up in Tibet, he saw that people were practicing sophisticated mentors without a foundation in ethics; that various schools of idea were crucial of each other, each thinking that they alone had the truth; he saw how tantra was being misconstrued and misused, and how some mentors that were popular at the time were not in line with what the Buddha and the realized sages that followed him had actually taught.

Out of his empathy and knowledge, Atisha fulfilled the Tibetans right where they were. He taught them the fundamental practice of taking haven so frequently that he came to be called by some ‘the sanctuary lama’, and when requested for a basic mentor that individuals could quickly comprehend, Atisha composed a text he called ‘A Light for the Course to Enlightenment’. This was the prototype of what has come to be known as the Lam Rim or the Stages of the Course mentors.

The entire course from starting to end

This category shows us the entire course at the same time, from beginning to end. It resembles having a map for the entire journey. It starts from where we are, saying in advance that all of us have Buddha Nature, which is the potential for enlightenment; which we now have this precious human life, which is subject to birth and death, and hard emotions, such as isolation, fear, and depression; it presents the Three Jewels, the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha, haven and principles, and a basic practice of meditation, and then continues to mentors on freedom, excellent compassion, and enlightenment. It

reveals the function of all the different Buddhist mentors, how they enhance each other, and how they are without contradiction.

Atisha went to Tibet and”saw that individuals were practicing innovative mentors without a foundation in principles.

“He taught a progressive, foundational approach of practice, now referred to as Lamrim. The solution of Atisha’s light I think we are in a comparable circumstance here as Atisha found when he went to Tibet. There is such a selection of mentors in the 21st century, and individuals typically pick from whatever is at hand. In some cases the practices work for them, and often not. As in Atisha’s time, there are comprised mentors being sold, that have no basis in Buddhism; there is sectarian conceit, close-mindedness, and what are only partial courses being taught — and all this at a time when there is a lot suffering, and when our world and our people are in crisis.

Just as in Atisha’s time, I see that individuals are practicing sitting meditation, but without much guidance; I hear about suitables of universal love and compassion, without the actions laid out; we become aware of basic ethics neglected, even by instructors, not to mention their students; and the Buddhist knowledge mentors pressed to the side, otherwise not understood. The Lam Rim is a solution for all that.

Charming statue of the fantastic sage Lama Je Tsong Khapa. Light, energy and inspiration of Lama Je Tsong Khapa It’s said in this custom, that in each generation, the children will be richer than their moms and dads– suggesting that the main points of the teachings have become easier to see. We now have the light, energy, and motivation of instructors such as Gampopa and Je Tsong Khapa to direct us. Realized practitioners such as the Dalai Lama and Lama Zopa Rinpoche have offered commentaries on their mentors, and these are extensively available.

What are called ‘root texts’ are summaries of teachings, that typically have been commemorated, remembered, and commented on by teachers. Back before there were numerous books, this was the easiest way to store and transfer ideas. In succeeding generations, even commentaries were put to memory, debated, contributed to, and gave, and we are successors to all these teachings. Root texts and commentaries, in addition to our own reflections and insights, enhance each other. We read and research study, listen to mentors, and practice whatever we need, the step that is right in front of us. Then when we return to the original overview, the significance is all there for us.

The idea of suffering developing from causes

. Whatever emerges from causes One of the basic concepts in the Stages of the Path is that whatever increases from causes- consisting of the decision to use up a spiritual path, to follow an instructor, to keep good principles, to look for freedom, or enlightenment as the best method to help others. This idea- of watering the roots of the type of life we desire for ourselves proves itself once again and again.

The Phases of the Path teachings help us to begin our spiritual practice; and when we’ve started, they assist us to continue, with clearness and vigor; and they result in the fulfillment of accomplishing the teachings for ourselves and all others.

Whenever I’m lacking motivation, or when I’m not sure of what to practice, I rely on these mentors. They are considerably empowering, and they clarify what is crucial for me at any time. I also try to keep in mind that individuals study the Lam Rim their entire lives, and are enhanced by it, and so I take the long view.

Now, personally, I do not believe it is necessary whether individuals ally themselves with one Buddhist custom or family tree or another. What matters to me is that they have an understanding of mentors that can assist them throughout their lives, totally free them from confusion and suffering, and enable them to benefit others in every needful method. We learn a lot of worthless things over the course of our lives, that at least this much should be known.

May all of us find a total path that works for us,

and leads us to freedom from samsara,

the endless round

Might we then share the advantages of our practice

with all of our precious children,

with our friends and family,

with animals, and with all beings

The excellent Atisha, who brough the Lamrim teachings to Tibet. Practice in Stages

, by Geshe Acharya Thubten Loden From The Course to Enlightenment in Tibetan Buddhism

Practice in Stages. While meditating on the lower topics, the goals for higher topics must be strengthened. While listening to the mentors on the higher subjects, your intention to practice the lower ones ought to likewise be strengthened. If it goes like this, you are practicing appropriately. On the other hand, if, while listening to greater mentors, your interest in the lower ones wanes, you will end up practicing in a vacuum, with no proper basis or assistance.

If your expert commitment compromises, resort strongly to reflecting on the benefits of expert devotion, and create a clear view of how it is the root of the path. If your aspiration for the Dharma compromises, you should focus on the aspects of leisure and fortune to recognize plainly the purpose and real value of your life.

If you catch strong accessory to the allurements of the pleasures of this life, focus your attention on impermanence to resolve this mindset. Becoming neglectful of your swears shows indifference to the outcomes of actions, so direct yourself to the study of karma.

If your revulsion towards cyclic existence is weak, discussing freedom is simple words. You should reflect once again and once again on the drawbacks of cyclic presence.

If you do not have a strong compulsion to benefit others, you have severed the root of the Mahayana, so you must direct yourself to the consideration of bodhicitta and its basis– excellent compassion.

If, having actually taken the bodhisattva vows and participated in the Excellences, you discover that your mind strongly sticks to looks as genuine, you must direct your attention to pondering space-like vacuum, and see all that appears as like an illusion. Concentrate on the non-dual nature of appearances and vacuum.

If your mind continues to roam frantically from the virtuous object of meditation and stays a slave to the objects of the senses, emphasize calm abiding to bring it under control.

Take each topic from guru commitment to unique insight and make it your meditation things for a week at a time. Then begin over once more at the beginning and repeat the cycle again and once again. In this method you will gradually deepen your understanding of each topic, while, at the very same time, keep the whole course in mind.

The Structure of All Excellent Qualities, by Tsong Khapa The structure of all good qualities is the kind and age-old master. Properly dedicating to him is the root of the course. By clearly seeing this and using great effort, May I rely upon him with fantastic regard.

By comprehending that the precious liberty of this rebirth is found only once, is significantly significant and tough to find once again, Might I generate the mind that unceasingly, day and night, takes hold of its essence.

This life is as impermanent as a water bubble– how quickly it decomposes and death comes! And after death, similar to a shadow follows the body, the results of black and white karma follow.

Finding firm and definite conviction in this, May I constantly take care to desert even the smallest negativeness and achieve all virtuous deeds.

Looking for samsaric pleasures is the door to all suffering. They are uncertain and can not be relied on. Recognizing these drawbacks, May I produce the strong long for the happiness of freedom.

Led by this pure thought, mindfulness, alertness and terrific care emerge. The root of the teachings is keeping the pratimoksha (specific liberation) pledges. May I accomplish this necessary practice.

Simply as I have fallen under the sea of samsara, so too have all mother migratory beings. May I see this, train in supreme bodhicitta, and bear the obligation of freeing migratory beings.

By plainly acknowledging that developing bodhicitta, without practicing the 3 types of morality1, I will not achieve enlightenment, May I practice the bodhisattva vows with excellent energy.

By calming distractions to wrong things, and correctly analyzing the meaning of truth, May I generate rapidly within my mindstream the combined course of calm abiding and unique insight.

Having become a pure vessel by training in the basic path, Might I enter the holy entrance of the lucky ones, the supreme vajra automobile.

At that time, the basis of achieving the two attainments is keeping pure promises and samaya. Having actually ended up being securely encouraged of this, May I safeguard these pledges and promises like my life.

Then, having understood the value of the two phases, which are the essence of the vajrayana, by practicing with excellent energy, never giving up the 4 sessions, May I understand the teachings of the holy guru.

Like that, may the virtuous teachers who show the worthy course, and the spiritual buddies who practice it have long lives. Might I calm completely all external and inner obstacles.

In all my renewals, never ever separated from best gurus, May I take pleasure in the splendid Dharma. By finishing the qualities of the phases and paths, Might I quickly achieve the state of Vajradhara.
